St. Ivo Maths Teacher, John Lane, cycled for 6 days from St. Ives to Edinburgh to see St. Ives Youth Theatre perform their highly acclaimed production of ‘Korczak’ at the Edinburgh Fringe.

John made the arduous 360 mile journey from St. Ives to Edinburgh – a trip that many car driver would find daunting - to visit the Festival and to see the debut performance by SIYT. This production, which has subsequently been featured nationally by the Observer newspaper and locally by Anglian News, tells the true and moving story of a group of young Jewish orphans growing up in the notorious Warsaw ghetto under Nazi occupation and the story of Janusz Korczak who gave them back their childhood and their dignity in the most appalling circumstances.

This evocative tale is retold as a musical and is all the more powerful for being performed by such a young and committed cast in the 60th anniversary year of the liberation of the death camps.

Those that saw the company’s moving performances in St. Ives experienced the emotion of this production and the power of this story of children’s humanity in the face of utter inhumanity.

For those of you lucky enough to be Edinburgh during this week, Korczak can be seen at the Demarco Roxy Art House in Edinburgh until Saturday 13th August – it’s worth cycling for 6 days to see! More information about the production can be found at www.ojemba.com
