An acclaimed Youth Theatre company from East Anglia come to Liverpool this week with a concert performance of ‘Vision’ – the musical story of Bernadette of Lourdes. This one night only performance by St. Ives Youth Theatre is at the Church of St. Margaret-Mary in Pilch Lane on Thursday 25th September at 7.30pm. If you think this is a dour, dusty religious piece – forget it! Punks, Emo’s, Skaters, Goths, Ravers, Indie Chicks, Scene, Shoegazers, Rappers, Chavs, Townies and Wannabes are the order of the day.
This electric production tells the dramatic and tragic story of Bernadette of Lourdes played out through 17 rock/pop songs, taking the audience on an exciting journey that incorporates ballads and jazz, comedy and pathos. Written by Jonathan Smith and Dominic Hartley, the show was first performed in 2002 before a CD launch at Drury Lane in London sponsored by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group.
Performances in Cambridgeshire in July drew an audience from all over the UK, SIYT set a high standard from their hometown run of Vision, press reviews of the show said "Everything about Vision was high quality". Vision writer Jonathan Smith told the final night audience, "St Ives as a community must be so proud of these young people, to produce performances that rival those of some professional companies."
Formed in 2001, SIYT is building a national reputation for the quality of it’s performance and education. The company is open to anyone in Secondary Education in Huntingdonshire and has an impressive body of work. In 2005, SIYT was nominated for an Amnesty International Award for it’s production of ‘Korzcak’ at the Edinburgh Fringe – a musical telling the harrowing but uplifting story of a children’s orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto during the Holocaust. In preparing for ‘Korzcak’, company members visited Auschwitz and met holocaust survivors and for Vision, a secular group joined a pilgrimage to Lourdes.
