A member of St Ives Youth Theatre, has beaten thousands of other young hopefuls to join the National Youth Theatre. Kate Newman, 17, was one of 250 young actors to be selected to take part in a two-week acting course during August.

The National Youth Theatre was established in 1956 to offer young people the chance to develop their creative and social skills through the medium of the theatrical arts. Past members of the National Youth Theatre include Dame Helen Mirren, Jude Law, Orlando Bloom and Little Britain duo Matt Lucas & David Walliams.

Kate, a Year 12 student at St. Ivo School, joined SIYT in 2005 to take a major role in the company's debut at the Edinburgh Fringe with 'Korzcak'. She has also taken lead roles in 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Bang Bang You're Dead' before playing Hermia in this spring's highly praised production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Kate was also Assistant Director for SIYT's production of 'Journey's End'.

Kate said: "This is a dream come true, a step towards my ambition to be a professional actor. SIYT and my teachers at St. Ivo School have been very supportive”. SIYT’s Artistic Director, Jonathan Salt said "I am incredibly pleased and we're very proud. She's worked hard to win this place and it's a terrific achievement. The auditions are very competitive and her success reflects well on the standards that we set ourselves at SIYT."

The company is now in rehearsal for it’s Summer Production, “Eyam” in July which promises to be a highly-charged and moving musical.
