Though we may complain about modern medicine, we should remember how far infection control has come since medieval times.
Shoppers in St Ives were treated to a reminder of how suspected plague carriers were treated in the 1660's. Cast members from SIYT's production Eyam re-enacted the mobbing of a woman that they believed may have been carrying the dreaded infection. She appeared on Bridge Street only to be greeted by shouts of fear and abuse. Hounded onto Market Hill, she was 'stoned' in front of bemused shoppers.
The cast were reenacted a scene from their summer production Eyam. This alarming sight was based upon an incident in the Peak District town of Tideswell when a woman from the plague village of Eyam woman was spotted amongst market shoppers and was driven from the town.
St Ives shoppers were also treated to songs from the musical Eyam which will be performed later this month at the Burgess Hall. Eyam tells the true story of the residents of a small Derbyshire village, faced in 1665 with an outbreak of bubonic plague. As the disease takes hold, Emmott Sydall & Roland Torre, recently engaged, must decide whether their relationship can continue. The same decision faces Meg Hawkesworth & Abel Torre. As both couples face the consequences of their decision, the community gathers under the leadership of their new minister, William Mompessan.
This musical poignantly & beautifully evokes the spirit of this
famous community, whose members, with incredible bravery, make
the ultimate sacrifice, seal themselves off from the outside world
to save the lives of countless others in the north of England.
With gorgeous, melodious music, this show presents the story
sensitively & poignantly. Be prepared for an evening both
beautiful and moving.
Eyam can be seen between 20th - 23rd July 2011 at the Burgess Hall in St. Ives – tickets are available online at www.siyt.co.uk/boxoffice.html and at Hephers Electrical in St. Ives.
