Members of a local youth theatre will be scratching their heads to help raise money for wounded serviceman and veterans.

In preparation for performances of ‘Journey’s End’ in November, members of St Ives Youth Theatre have had a good old fashioned short backs and sides at the hands of local hairdresser, Gee Venditti's.

Set in the trenches at Saint-Quentin, France, in 1918 towards the end of the First World War, Journey's End gives a glimpse into the experiences of the officers of a British Army infantry company in World War I.

“This will be our debut in the Corn Exchange” said SIYT’s Chairman, Chris Lewis, “and the choice of Journey’s End is very poignant as we will be performing at a time when the country remembers those that have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.” The company will be donating all ticket sales for the performance on Armistice Day (Thursday 11th November) to Help for Heroes.

Cast member Luke Williams reflected “In the First World War, guys not much older than me were fighting in the trenches and being gassed. Getting a haircut to take part in a play to remember them is no real sacrifice in comparison.”

In preparing for this piece, the company plan to visit Aldershot and battlefields in Northern France and the company are investigating the impact of the war upon their own relatives - SIYT would welcome the opportunity to meet with veterans of any conflict to help with their preparations.

Photographs can be made available from the event.
